The picture gallery

Behind the portrait

The exhibition areas of the Picture Gallery are home to our main exhibition this year. Its title is Behind the Portrait and it presents the best and the worst, the highest and the lowest quality, the most interesting and the most ordinary portraits in our museum’s collection. All of them contain an authentic story, reflecting the specific circumstances of the time and geographical space in which it was created. We have selected portraits from different periods and different areas, which open up a diverse range of related themes. If you’re curious about what’s BEHIND THE PORTRAIT, then just walk into it.

The Northern Bastion

The lookout and the reconstruction path.

The top of the northern bastion and the path to it provide a unique and popular experience when visiting our castle. On the walls next to the staircase you will notice comparative photos BEFORE/AFTER reconstructing the castle and all its grounds. Photographs from different periods show how much effort has been put into making Červený Kamen Castle look the way it does today. At the end of the ascent, you’ll be rewarded with a view of the surrounding meadows and forests of the Small Carpathian Mountains.

Admission: FREE OF CHARGE

The Northern Bastion II.

 Defence system and lapidary.

The northern bastion currently serves as our museum’s second exhibition area. Its content is currently a presentation of the castle’s defence system, its uniqueness and the entire reconstruction process. The once mediocre medieval castle was rebuilt into an impressive Renaissance fortress within twenty years. Do you want to know who was behind this miracle? All who defended the castle? And how elaborately the defence system was devised?

The Gatehouse

Gatehouse or prison?

Prior to the 18th century, a drawbridge that led to the gatehouse served all people, animals and carriages. It was here that the castle garrison controlled all movement in and out of the courtyard. The drawbridge is now only a memory in the form of holes for chains. It was replaced with a stone bridge in the aforementioned 18th century and even a makeshift prison was added to the gatehouse. In turn, this is reminiscent of the wooden trap (stocks) where the guilty were locked with their feet and hands. These spaces are relatively easy to find, they are just opposite the entrance to the cellars.

The pressing room

Viticulture at Červený Kamen Castle.

At the same time, we use the castle pressing room in various ways. From theatre performances, social events, expert lectures or wine tastings. The permanent exhibition in this specific area is dedicated to viticulture at Červený Kamen Castle. It describes how the castle and the local nobility were connected with wine, how they approached their peasants in this respect or reveals some funny truths regarding the popularity of wine and its consumption. The area also includes various newly restored parts of wine-making equipment and a magnificent log press, the largest and one of the best preserved in Slovakia.

The Way of the Cross

A little walk around.

If you’re in the mood for a little walk, the Way of the Cross is perfect for you. It was created in the 1760s-1770s. After leaving the grounds, you’ll see a row of statues in the meadow on your right leading up to the forests of the Small Carpathians mountains. If you follow them, you’ll arrive at the Pálffy burial chapel. You can also visit the local calvary just behind it. The statues represent various saints, they’re masterfully crafted by art and craftsmanship and during the walk you have the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing walk in nature together with an aesthetic experience.
